Posted on April 20th, 2010 by admin  |  No Comments »

An array definition file for country list can be quite useful. Instead of keeping them inside the mysql database table one can directly include this file and avoid database processing you will find its application in many places for example when user registering at your site and selecting from country list simply include this file and use php foreach statement

file countries.php
=============

</code>

<?php

Proper way to code java swing applications

Posted on April 11th, 2010 by admin  |  No Comments »

Here am adding small disclaimer that this cannot be the definitive way to do so however if you are starting fresh or in the initial learning curve of your  swing application the the following tips can be help to you. I use java netbeans for creating java and swing application I highly recommend that if you are not using anything or other thing download it and start with this IDE this is very good one some reason it like it are; gives proper directory structure to your program and formats the code with proper white space, whenever you use predefined classes which are not imported in the header of your class definition it asks to add the import lines …cool

Creating  splash  screen for your swing app
Reason is obvious that most of swing application tends to be slow something is required to intimate user that application is loading and he need to sit with patience and do not navigate away or double click application launcher. Some application vendors creates splash screen with  multi-threading techniques which is absolutely not required what you have to do is instead of keeping main function which initiates the execution of program  Jframe window class keep them inside another simple class and in this class load first splash screen then in the next lines load main Jframe window and the third line will be for disposing splash screen that executes once the main window class has loaded fully.

Java main JFrame main window container
The common desktop application usually have one parent container window and remaining are child window, the container window is created using JFrame class whereas the child windows are built using JInternalFrame, now here  in main window there will be several menu items on the top and additionally you can add toolbar buttons there, most of the peoples do starts creating and populating menu and toolbar items in the constructor of container class itself which makes the future maintenance and update of this class very difficult as number of those menu/toolbar items and their action function tends to be large and create long confusing code.

So the better option is create one mytoolbar and mymenubar class by extending  JToolbar & JmenuBar classes respectively and defined their action functions in the body of their class definition instead of keeping them in main container class.

Don’t implement  event listeners in main JFrame class definition
When we create a container frame class usually we add one implements statement in the class definition with  an actionListener or any  other event listener class this is not good practice instead of that define different event listener for toolbar and menu items separately
